What Is Wrong With You People? (Or, Why I’m Supporting Clarkson)
It’s a sad, sad state of affairs.
Following the biggest industrial action seen in the UK in over 20 years, the media, government and unions’ biggest concern is a satirical comment made by a well known TV presenter on a well known BBC show. A comment that’s been taken completely out of context, I might add.
Yup, you guessed it. I am of course referring to Mr. Jeremy Clarkson, and his interview on The One Show last night.
Now before you jump down my throat in a fit of rage, let me say this. I am a Civil Servant and a union member, and yesterday I joined a million others in the industrial action with my head held high. I stand 100% behind the strike over pay and pensions.
Now that that’s been said, onwards to THAT COMMENT (TC) then. Any one who actually watched The One Show last night (and has a functioning sense for sarcasm) will have understood the Clarkson was obviously making a joke at the extent of the BBC and media coverage (or should I say “debacle”) of the whole strike situation. Those of you who didn’t watch, but heard the comment via Twitter/Facebook/any news station/a friend, will probably be surprised to hear that Mr Clarkson prefaced the comment by saying that he actually liked the strikers.
What followed immediately after TC was a storm of enraged tweets from people who had either a) missed the point entirely, b) read the quote taken out of it’s context or c) fallen completely for the disgraceful misrepresentation purveyed by the media afterwards.
So have this to say.
First, to those of you who have proudly announced that you “support Jezza’s comments” and think that “he’s right anyway”; Shame on you! He wasn’t serious! The fact that you have reacted in such a way you have makes you a much, much worse person than he.
And secondly, to all my fellow public servants & union members who are currently baying for Clarkson’s blood. You have sll seen and felt the affects of the government and media’s blatent misrepresentation over the pensions situation. Perhaps you should bear in mind how it feels to be attacked by the misinformed before you start throwing stones yourselves.
